Addressing

1. Client LAN and WLAN Subnets

  • no devices have a DHCP reservation (neither IPv6 nor IPv4), so all IP addresses are dynamic

  • all devices can use DDNS: *.dhcp6.bfh.ch for IPv6, *.dhcp.bfh.ch for IPv4

2. Labor Subnets

  • no devices have a DHCP reservation (both IPv6 and IPv4), so all IP addresses are dynamic

  • all devices can use DDNS: *.dhcp6.bfh.ch for IPv6, *.dhcp.bfh.ch for IPv4

Exception: if and only if the user of the subnet can show a legitimate use-case why static adressing is absolutely needed, the whole subnet can be switched to static adressing:

  • DDNS is not available

  • all devices should have a DHCP reservation, so all IP addresses are static

  • all devices should have DNS records

3. Facility Management Subnets

  • all devices should have a DHCP reservation (both IPv6 and IPv4), so all IP addresses are static

  • all devices should have DNS records (IPv6 forward and reverse, IPv4 forward and reverse, or both IPv6 and IPv4 forward and reverse)
